Testers
Install the test build
GateCaster is a test build and is not signed by Microsoft or notarized by Apple yet. Your system does not know the app, so it warns you the first time you open it. The steps below tell your system to trust it. You only need to do this once: the game updates itself after that.
Download the game only from this site (Download). To check that your file is the one we released, compare its SHA-256 with the SHA256SUMS file next to it in the downloads.
Windows
Download GateCaster-…-setup.exe.
- If your browser warns you about the download. In Edge, the download may say it "isn't commonly downloaded". Open the downloads list, click … next to the file, then Keep. If Edge asks again, click Show more and then Keep anyway. In Chrome, click Keep or Download anyway.
- Run the setup. Windows shows a blue box: "Windows protected your PC".
- Click More info. The publisher shows as "Unknown publisher".
- Click Run anyway.
- If Windows asks "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?", click Yes. The setup installs GateCaster and adds a Start menu and a desktop shortcut.
If your antivirus stops the file, allow it in its quarantine or history, or add the GateCaster folder (C:\Program Files\GateCaster) to its exceptions.
macOS
Download GateCaster-…-macos.zip. It runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 11 or later on Apple Silicon).
- Open the zip (Safari may have unzipped it already) and drag GateCaster into your Applications folder.
- Double-click GateCaster. macOS says "GateCaster" Not Opened, or that Apple could not verify it is free of malware. Click Done (or OK). Do not move it to the Bin.
- Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security. Scroll down to Security. You will see "GateCaster" was blocked to protect your Mac.
- Click Open Anyway and confirm with your password or Touch ID.
- Open GateCaster again and click Open Anyway in the last question. From now on it opens like any other app.
The Open Anyway button shows for about an hour after the blocked try. If you do not see it, open GateCaster again, then go back to Privacy & Security.
From the Terminal. If you prefer, this removes the download mark from the app and has the same effect:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/GateCaster.appIf macOS says the app "is damaged and can't be opened", the download mark is the cause too: run the command above, then open GateCaster again.
Linux
Download GateCaster-…-x86_64.AppImage. It installs nothing: the file is the game.
- Make it executable: right-click the file, Properties, Permissions, and tick Allow executing file as program. Or in a terminal:
chmod +x GateCaster-*.AppImage - Double-click it, or run
./GateCaster-*.AppImage.
After the install
At the first start the game downloads its files (about 90 MB) and asks once for your tester's key. No key yet? Ask for one. When we release a new version, the game installs it at its next start, without these steps.
